Creative Space Called FAD

We consider the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem to be an art and design school, respectful to the history of art, philosophy, and science as traditional academic values to be vigorously developed and framed into innovative artistic and theoretical views, while coping with current social and cultural challenges.

We endeavour to preserve and develop traditional craft and artistic techniques while simultaneously seeking ways to explore new technologies that exploit the possibilities of artistic creation, not only for the sake of personal reflection but also to take part in identifying current trends based on scientific findings and shaping the contemporary or so-called artistic community.

Art can and should, we believe, inspire as it shapes not only the imagination and our sense of the richness of life in the traditional aesthetic sense but in a scientific and technological one as well. We believe that art and science can develop new approaches to understanding the world that are not merely based on exact measurement, but also on the immeasurable. We believe that contemporary art and design have enough energy to raise the level of social interaction and the environment.

The Fine Arts study programme at the Faculty of Art and Design provides comprehensive artistic, theoretical, and practical training for designers and graphic designers, photographers, and artists focusing on digital media as well as curators of contemporary art.

We are a living organism, joining what is learned in the studio with theoretical disciplines and with exhibition, presentation, and publication opportunities. We thus give life to a holistic creative environment whose innovative artistic and research activities simultaneously play the role of a vibrant academic institution within the broader community, not just in its home town of Ústí nad Labem but also in national and international contexts.

We offer our students sixteen artistic and design studios, curatorial studies, and an education in theoretical and traditional practical artistic disciplines in a newly renovated building with a number of specialized workplaces, workshops, and exhibition spaces. We publish and support publications on the theory and personalities of contemporary art and design.

For students and educators, we create and support an international environment via internships abroad, exchange programmes, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions of major international designers, artists, and theorists. We collaborate with schools, institutions, galleries, and design studios not only in Europe but also in Asia and America.

By their work acclaimed both at home and abroad, many of our graduates have already demonstrated the remarkable energy of this relatively young artistic centre in north-western Bohemia.

Every year we open our doors to talented candidates trying to achieve their ultimate goals of artistic creation so that their work and study be formed by the ideals of academic creative freedom and artistic discourse, thus becoming a part of the creative space called FAD.
