D3.1 Exhibitions at AASZ, PU, PUNO, UNIMC, UJEP
The exhibition realized within the TICASS project is focused on the city spaces in the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and with a new partnership also in Kenya, and their aesthetics, because the partners in the project are settled there.
At the beginning of the exhibition for the project, TICASS was an idea of conveying a view of the public space in the project partner cities, and also to present the visual communication strategies connected to the public space as well as the public as a whole (as viewers.) The primary aims of the exhibition are to acquaint the recipients with cultural patterns in visual communication other than their own, and to bring them closer to the perception of pictures from different cultural settings. For this reason, the exhibition – as an organic show presentation – was from the start supposed to be transferred to all TICASS member institutions during the secondments.
The exhibition was prepared to serve as a research tool in the project, too, because the exposition of the exhibition, exactly the visual material that was presented, was used for research work. Its recipients are asked about their perception, understanding, emotional reactions, connotations, and so forth in relation to the presented images – first this was done by means of Gerbners’ survey (in Poland, 2017), and later (since Kenya in 2018) by means of interviews with the focus groups.
Therefore, we may speak about two objectives of the exhibition. The first one is to create an open space for a visual reception of public space for viewers, to show them the specification of visual language and to facilitate their understanding of visual messages in different cultural settings; the second one is to create a space for visual research in the project.
All partners helped with preparation of the content of this exhibition in the project and they took photographs, made videos, and/or produced the artworks. After the first show, the team performed an evaluation for future work with this exhibition in the project and its transfers during the secondments. The exhibition is being prepared for the actual secondment in each country, directly for a specific gallery space and for research work with focus groups. The curators are choosing the visual material for an actual condition of reception and interpretation processes.
