D1.5: Seminars and trainings on cultural contexts of interpretation and perception of images

The main objective for realization in the set of Seminars and trainings on cultural contexts of interpretation and perception of images during each group mobility to cooperating institutions in Poland, Kenya, United Kingdom, Italy, and Czech Republic was to focus researchers in the TICASS project on differences and similarities in perception and interpretation of image, caused by cultural conditions and influences. The commonsense assumption that communication with images is much more broadly and easily understood than verbal communication is generally true, however this does not mean that all images are understood and responded to emotionally in the same way across different cultures. The idea was to dismiss the Eurocentric perspective then, and instead to learn from Partner institutions – first with the University of Witwatersrand in the Republic of South Africa (2017-2018), then Pwani University in Kenya (since 2018), sharing their research perspectives. Seminars and trainings on the cultural contexts of interpretation and perception of images offered also a space for discussions on the underlying reasons for the observed similarities and differences of the worldviews, which may be placed on two levels: socio-cultural and evolutionary.
